Fennel seeds(Foeniculum vulgare) - Benefits

Fennel seeds(Foeniculum vulgare): Hindi - Saunf; Telugu - Sompu; Tamil - Shombu

Drinking a decoction made of fennel seeds soaked in warm water first thing in the morning could prevent you from catching swine flu.
Fennel , also called sometimes as 'sweet cumin' is an aromatic spice very widely used in Indian & Middle-eastern cuisines. Added to any dish, this spice accentuates its taste & flavor profile. Most importantly, its numerous medicinal values make it even more valuable.

Intestinal tract-Fennel water has properties similar to those of anise and dill water: mixed with sodium bicarbonate and syrup, these waters constitute the domestic 'gripe water', used to ease flatulence in infants; it also can be made into a syrup to treat babies with colic or painful teething. Long term ingestion of fennel preparations by babies is a known cause of thelarche. For adults, fennel seeds or tea can relax the intestines and reduce bloating caused by digestive disorders. Essential oil of fennel has these properties in concentration.Fennel tea, also employed as a carminative, is made by pouring boiling water on a teaspoonful of bruised fennel seeds.
Eyes and Breastmilk-In the Indian subcontinent, fennel seeds are also eaten raw, sometimes with some sweetener, as it is said to improve eyesight. There are historical anecdotes that fennel is a galactogogue improving the milk supply of a breastfeeding mother.
Blood and urine- Some people use fennel as a diuretic, and it may be an effective diuretic and a potential drug for treatment of hypertension.

Uses:
In illness-
Fennel has long been associated with digestion, and it is an ingredient, along with its fellow umbellifer, dill, of baby gripewater. (If a baby has colic, some boiled carrot and fennel water could help.)

In beauty-
An infusion of fennel seeds can be cleansing and gently toning for the skin.
Fennel is also very helpful for eye inflammations, puffiness and conjunctivitis. Boil 15 ml (1 tbsp) crushed fennel seeds in 600 ml (1 pint) water for a few minutes. Leave to infuse and cool then strain. Use in an eye bath and clean both eyes several times. If you do this several times a day, the problem should disappear fairly rapidly

In cookery-
Fennel is the herb most associated with fish: the feathery leaves are used in fish sauces, soups and salads; the dried stalks are often placed under a whole fish to be grilled on the barbecue.

BREAK ++++++++++++ FASTTTT!!!!!!

Why breakfast?

Forty years of breakfast related studies -- Eating breakfast is very important for the brain and the body first thing in the morning.

Breakfast is the first chance the body has to refuel its glucose levels, also known as blood sugar, after eight to 12 hours without a meal or snack. Glucose is essential for the brain and is the main energy source. Blood glucose also helps fuel the muscles needed for physical activity throughout the day.

If you deprive your body of food in the morning you may find that you feel tired, dizzy and irritable and that your concentration is poor. It may take you longer to carry out tasks or you just might not feel up to anything mentally strenuous let alone physical. You will probably find yourself snapping at people unintentionally, especially if under stress and you will no doubt soon start to feel pangs of hunger as the morning wears on.

If you don't eat anything in the morning, you will most likely find yourself craving something sweet to eat, as your body cries out for a quick fix to boost energy levels. If you are at work and it is not yet time for lunch, this is one of the moments when you may find yourself reaching for something very unhealthy such as a chocolate bar, croissant, cream cake or other unhealthy snacks. For those who are watching their weight, this is disastrous.

It is also possible that you may become so hungry that you grab twice as many unhealthy snacks to eat before lunch or even end up eating all of your packed lunch by 11.30 am.

Sun Light - Advantages

Vitamin D
Ultraviolet light converts cholesterol in the skin to vitamin D. This vitamin is essential for the proper handling of calcium in the body and thus in the prevention of rickets and adult osteomalacia.Getting out in the sun, therefore, is a good way to lower cholesterol levels in our bodies. If we expose six square inches of our skin to direct sunlight for one hour per day, we will obtain our minimum daily requirement for vitamin D.
Body Regulation
Sunlight helps to regulate almost all our bodily processes. Starting from the top (our minds) and working down, sunlight has been shown to increase our sense of well-being and to improve sleep. Ultraviolet light coming into our eyes stimulates the pineal gland, which helps to regulate our activity cycles. Thyroid function may improve. Hormone imbalances tend to level out.

Sunlight stimulates the production of more red blood cells, increasing the oxygen content of the blood, and thus increasing muscular endurance. It also stimulates production of more white blood cells and enhances oxygen utilization, which helps the body maintain its defense against disease.
Appetite may be improved, along with our assimilation, elimination, and metabolic processes. Poisonous chemicals and heavy metals are removed from the bloodstream faster, while levels of healthy trace minerals are actually increased in the blood. Muscular strength has been increased, even in those unable to exercise. Sunlight has even been found helpful in the treatment of stomach ulcers.
SUNNING IS A VERY OLD NATURAL EYESIGHT IMPROVEMENT ACTIVITY
The Scriptures Say:"Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun."

How to Reduce Intestinal Gas Naturally

Frequent belching of air from the stomach
Bloating of the abdomen after eating
Frequent passing of gas from the rectum

Everyone belches occasionally, especially after eating. However, some people belch frequently, and it becomes annoying and embarrassing. Belching is the result of too much air in the stomach. It gets there by being swallowed with food or liquid. The stomach releases it by forcing it up the foodpipe in a belch.

Hints for Reducing Belching

Air swallowers should concentrate on trying to reduce the number of times they swallow. Avoid pipes, cigarettes, and cigars; chewing gum and hard candy; sipping through straws and bottles with narrow mouths; and dentures that do not fit properly. They can increase saliva or air swallowing. Avoid foods that contain air, such as carbonated beverages or whipped cream. Fizzy medicines, such as bicarbonate of soda, also add air to the stomach. Eat slowly. Gulping food and beverages adds large amounts of air to the stomach. Do not deliberately swallow air to force a belch.

Bloating

For unknown reasons, bloating -- that feeling of swelling in the abdomen -- occurs most often in females. For many people, it is simply a sensation of stuffiness. However, for some it can feel downright painful. It is not necessarily caused by too much gas. Usually bloating is a result of poor motility. Motility refers to the contractions that automatically move food through the digestive tract. Poor motility slows the movement of food through the stomach and intestinal tract. Eating fatty foods can also delay stomach emptying, leading to bloating.

Usually however, bloating is not serious. It may be caused by certain foods or simply by eating too fast. So, a change in eating habits is often all that is needed to control this condition.

Rectal GasExcessive flatus (rectal gas) is most often produced by bacteria in the colon (the large intestine). There are literally hundreds of different bacteria normally present in the colon. Most are harmless. In fact, they are even beneficial to digestion. However, bacteria rely on carbohydrates and sugars for their nutrition. In the process of breaking down these nutrients, bacteria generate gases such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane. Under normal conditions, many of these gases are reabsorbed and do not cause excessive flatus.

Carbohydrates and sugars are normally digested and absorbed in the stomach and small intestine. Some people have disorders that interfere with the normal digestive process. For example, lactose is a sugar found in milk. It requires the enzyme lactase for digestion. A person with lactase deficiency may not be able to digest lactose properly. These abnormalities in digestion allow carbohydrates and sugars to pass undigested into the colon, where gas forming bacteria thrive on them. Some foods, such as legumes, cabbage, or certain types of bran contain carbohydrates that the body cannot digest. However, bacteria in the colon can use them for food, and as they are digested by the bacteria, gas is produced.

Home medicine : Boil 1 tsp garlic in 1 cup of milk and take twice a day

Soak 1/4 tsp of methi (fenugreek) seeds in a cup of water overnight. Drink that water in the morning and discard the seeds. Very good for gas.

COFFEE ---- DOSAGE

Caffeine: How much is too much?

For most people, moderate doses of caffeine — 200 to 300 milligrams (mg), or about two to three cups of brewed coffee a day — aren't harmful.

Heavy daily caffeine use — more than 500 to 600 mg a day, or about four to seven cups of coffee — can cause:
Restlessness Anxiety Irritability Muscle tremors Sleeplessness Headaches Nausea, diarrhea or other gastrointestinal problems Abnormal heart rhythms.

Caffeine stimulates the loss of Calcium through the urine. A study showed that drinking more than two cups of average brewed coffee or four cups of average brewed tea per day can increase Calcium loss which may lead to Osteoporosis. So, it is advisable to lessen the caffeine intake.

Completely avoid caffeine if hot flashes seem to be triggered by it. Try substituting non-caffeinated teas or decaffeinated coffee for caffeinated beverages.

Excess caffeine also causes the kidneys to excrete more Calcium, a factor in bone thinning in postmenopausal women.

However, in a latest survey maintain that kidney function is influenced by too much coffee or caffeine intake. It could lead to some problems for example diuresis, detrusor instability and kidney stones.
